Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe: Traditional Prayers and How to Pray Them

She Asked for Trust, Not Eloquence

At Tepeyac in 1531, Our Lady of Guadalupe did not ask Juan Diego to pray beautifully. She asked him to trust her. She called him "my dear little son." She told him not to be afraid. She said she was his mother.

That exchange defines the right posture for any prayer addressed to her. She does not require formal language, memorized formulas, or an impressive track record of devotion. She requires the same thing she asked of Juan Diego: confidence that she is listening, and the willingness to bring her what is really on your heart.

The prayers in this guide have been used by the faithful for generations. They are a starting point, not a ceiling. Her own words to Juan Diego remain the most reassuring thing ever said about how to approach her: "Am I not here, I who am your mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy?"

A Short Prayer for Daily Use

For those who want something simple to pray each day, before work, before sleep, or at any moment that calls for her presence:

Our Lady of Guadalupe, my mother, I place myself under your protection today. You know what I need better than I do. Bring it to your Son. Do not let go of my hand. Amen.

This prayer is short enough to memorize and broad enough to carry any intention.

The Traditional Prayer of Our Lady of Guadalupe

This prayer, rooted in the words she spoke to Juan Diego, has been prayed in homes and parishes for generations:

Our Lady of Guadalupe, mystical rose, intercede for the Church, protect the Holy Father, help all who invoke you in their necessities. Since you are the ever Virgin Mary and Mother of the true God, obtain for us from your most holy Son the grace of keeping our faith, sweet hope in the midst of the bitterness of life, burning charity, and the precious gift of final perseverance. Amen.

A Prayer for Families

Our Lady of Guadalupe came to a people, not just to an individual. Her message at Tepeyac was addressed to families, to communities, to all who dwell in this land. This prayer is suited for a family praying together, for a home altar, or for any moment when a household wants to place itself under her protection:

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of our home, we place our family under your mantle. Watch over our children. Strengthen our marriage. Protect us from what would divide us. Lead us all, one by one and together, to your Son. We trust that you hear us. We trust that you bring our prayers to Him. Do not let us wander far from you. Amen.

A Prayer for Those Who Are Suffering

She told Juan Diego she was the mother of all who are in pain, of all who weep, of all who need her. This prayer is for difficult seasons:

Our Lady of Guadalupe, you know what I am carrying right now. You told your servant Juan Diego that you hear the laments of those who seek your help. I am seeking your help. I do not know how this ends. I only know that you are my mother and that you promised to be near. Be near me today. Intercede for me. I trust you. Amen.

The Prayer of Pope John Paul II

Saint John Paul II visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe four times. The prayer he offered there has become one of the most beloved in the Guadalupan tradition. For the full text and the story behind it, read our dedicated article on the Prayer of John Paul II to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

How to Pray to Her

Before her image, if you have an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in your home, pray in front of it. The image is not magic, but the practice of turning toward her image makes the habit of prayer more natural and more sustained. A statue on a home altar, a medal worn around the neck, a print on the wall: any of these can serve as a focal point.

With the rosary. The rosary is one of the most traditional ways of praying with her. She has identified herself with the rosary at nearly every major Marian apparition. Praying a rosary in her honor on her feast day, December 12, or on any Saturday, which is traditionally Mary's day in the Catholic week, is a practice with deep roots.

With her own words. The words she spoke to Juan Diego are themselves a form of prayer. To read them slowly, to let them land, to receive them as addressed to you personally: this is a form of contemplative prayer that requires no formula at all.

Do not be troubled or weighed down with grief. Do not fear any illness or vexation, anxiety, or pain. Am I not here, I who am your mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not your fountain of life? Are you not in the folds of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms?

Why Catholics Pray to Her

Praying to Our Lady of Guadalupe is not worship. It is intercession: asking a mother to bring your needs to her Son. The Catholic Church teaches that the saints in heaven remain connected to those on earth through the communion of saints, and that asking Mary to intercede is not different in kind from asking a friend to pray for you, except that her closeness to Christ makes her intercession uniquely powerful.

She is not an intermediary who stands between the soul and God. She is a mother who leads her children directly to her Son. Every prayer she receives, she brings to Him.
