One small medal, resting just below the collarbone, carrying the whole of the scapular devotion. This 14K solid gold scapular medal necklace bears Our Lady of Mount Carmel on one side and the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the other, on a fine chain that adjusts to 16 or 18 inches. It is a quiet, everyday sign of a promise: to belong to Mary and to keep close to the Heart of her Son.
About the Design
A single rectangular medal in solid 14K yellow gold hangs at the center of a fine flat cable chain. A small ring at each upper corner joins the medal to the chain, so it sits flat and stays centered at the neckline instead of turning or flipping. One face shows Our Lady of Mount Carmel holding the Child Jesus, crowned with rays of light. The other shows the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The matte finish on the medal softens the light and lets the relief read clearly, while the bright chain adds a little sparkle around it.
The chain closes with a spring ring clasp stamped 585 and a tag stamped 14K with the maker's mark. You can wear the same chain at 16 inches, close to the base of the neck, or at 18 inches, slightly lower.
About the Devotion
The Brown Scapular is one of the oldest Marian devotions in the Church. Carmelite tradition holds that in 1251 Our Lady appeared to Saint Simon Stock, prior general of the Carmelite Order, and gave him the scapular as a sign of her protection. Wearing it expresses consecration to Mary and a commitment to imitate her virtues. The Church cautions that it is a sign of faith, never a lucky charm, and that it points to a life of prayer, the sacraments, and fidelity to the Gospel.
In 1910, Pope Saint Pius X permitted the faithful enrolled in the cloth scapular to wear a single medal in its place. The medal must show the Sacred Heart of Jesus on one side and an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the other, in the exact form of this medal. The devotion to the Sacred Heart itself was made known through the revelations to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in the 1670s.

Care Instructions
Solid 14K gold does not tarnish and can be worn every day. To protect the matte texture, clean the medal with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush, then dry with a soft cloth. Avoid polishing cloths, as they can burnish the matte surface to a shine. Remove the necklace before swimming in chlorinated water or using household chemicals, and store it in its box so the fine chain does not tangle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can this necklace be worn in place of the cloth Brown Scapular?
Yes, for those already enrolled in the Brown Scapular. Since 1910, the Church has permitted a single medal with the Sacred Heart of Jesus on one side and the Blessed Virgin Mary on the other to replace the cloth scapular, which is exactly the form of this medal. We always enroll with the cloth scapular, and a priest or deacon must then bless the medal. The cloth scapular remains the preferred form.
Is this necklace blessed?
No. Our pieces are not sold blessed. Any priest or deacon can bless it for you, often right after Mass.
How is this different from your other gold scapular necklaces?
This is our single-medal scapular necklace: one double-sided medal centered at the collarbone on a chain that adjusts to 16 or 18 inches. Our collarbone scapular necklace carries two medals side by side, and our 18K gold scapular necklaces come on longer 24-inch chains that rest at the chest.
Is the length adjustable?
Yes. You can wear the same chain at 16 inches, at the base of the neck near the collarbone, or at 18 inches, slightly lower. The medal stays centered at either length.
Is this solid gold or gold-filled?
Solid 14K gold. The medal and the chain are both 14K solid yellow gold. The clasp tag is stamped 14 K, K and the spring ring is stamped 585, the international mark for 14K gold. It is not plated or gold-filled.
Where is this necklace made? A fine gold jewelry manufacturer in Turkey makes it and imports it to the United States.
