Bring the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe into your home or sacred space exactly as the faithful have venerated it for nearly five centuries. This tilma replica is sold at the gift shops of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. It carries the Basilica's authorization, with its certification of authenticity reproduced directly on the canvas.
About the Design
The image is reproduced on faux jute canvas chosen to echo the coarse texture of the original tilma, the cloak of Saint Juan Diego. Every detail of the miraculous image is preserved: the rose-colored tunic, the star-covered blue-green mantle, the black sash at her waist, the crescent moon beneath her feet, and the angel who carries her. The result is a reverent, faithful reproduction for prayer and contemplation.
Each canvas carries the Basilica and Archdiocesan authorization markings reproduced directly on the image. These include the signature of Carlos Cardinal Aguiar Retes, signed as Archbishop Primate of Mexico, next to the statement in Spanish: "Esta Imagen es copia fiel del Sagrado Ayate de San Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin y Certificado de Autenticidad," identifying the image as a faithful copy of the Sacred Ayate of Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. The canvas also bears the signature and authorization of Mons. Martínez Ávila, Vicar General, Episcopal Vicar of Guadalupe, and Rector of the Sanctuary.
About the Devotion
In December 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac, near present-day Mexico City. When Bishop Juan de Zumárraga asked for a sign, Our Lady sent Juan Diego to gather roses blooming out of season. As he opened his tilma before the bishop, the roses fell to the floor, and her image appeared on the cloth.
The original tilma is still displayed in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most visited Marian shrines in the world. Our Lady of Guadalupe is honored as Patroness of the Americas, and her feast is celebrated on December 12.
