In 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico. When the bishop demanded proof, he opened his tilma to reveal roses, and Mary's image miraculously imprinted on the cloth. That image remains in the Basilica of Guadalupe, the most visited Marian shrine in the world.
