About the Design

The centerpiece is a small oval medal of Our Lady of Guadalupe, showing her as she appeared on the tilma of Saint Juan Diego, with the rays and the crescent moon at her feet. Below it hangs a traditional crucifix. Both are set on a linked rosary-style chain that finishes at 18 inches, a length that sits at the collarbone on most adults and layers cleanly under or over a blouse.

The metal is 14k gold-filled, not solid gold and not gold plate. Gold-filled means a layer of real 14k gold is bonded to a base metal core under heat and pressure, and by United States standards, that gold layer must be at least one-twentieth of the total weight. It is many times thicker than standard plating, which is why gold-filled pieces hold their color through years of daily wear rather than months.

About the Devotion

In December of 1531, Our Lady appeared on the hill of Tepeyac to Saint Juan Diego, a native Nahua man, and asked that a church be built there. She spoke to him in his own language and called him the smallest of her children. The image left on his tilma has been venerated ever since, and Our Lady of Guadalupe is honored as patroness of the Americas, with her feast kept on December 12.

Wearing her image is an old and simple practice: a reminder carried through the day that she is present, that she asked to be sought, and that she said she would hear those who came to her.

Care Instructions

Gold-filled metal is durable, but the finish lasts longest with a little care. Put the necklace on after perfume, lotion, and hairspray, never before. Remove it before swimming, showering, or sleeping. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wearing to remove skin oils. Store it flat in the gift box, away from direct sunlight and away from other jewelry that could scratch it.

Is this solid gold?

No. It is 14k gold-filled, which means a bonded layer of real 14k gold over a base metal core, with at least one-twentieth of the total weight in gold. Can I pray the full rosary with this necklace?

This is a rosary-style necklace, not a full five-decade rosary, so it is worn as a devotional piece rather than used to count a complete rosary. For praying the full rosary, we offer traditional rosaries in our rosary collection.

Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?

Gold-filled metal does not turn skin green the way plated costume jewelry often does, because the gold layer is thick enough that the base metal does not come into contact with the skin. With normal care, the color holds for years of regular wear.

Can I wear it in the shower or the pool?

We do not recommend it. Chlorine, salt water, and soap residue will dull the finish faster than anything else. Take it off first.

Is the necklace blessed?

No. In keeping with Church guidelines, we do not sell items in a blessed state. Your parish priest can bless the necklace for you, and many people ask for this after receiving a devotional piece.
