In 1830, in the chapel of Rue du Bac in Paris, the Blessed Virgin appeared to a young novice named Saint Catherine Labouré and entrusted to her the design of the medal now known throughout the world. The reverse carries the symbols she revealed in the same vision: the cross and the letter M intertwined, the two Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, and the twelve stars of Revelation.
