1. The Brazilian metal scapular necklace, paper clip chain. Two small rectangular medals: Our Lady of Mount Carmel holding the Christ Child on one, the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the other. Both medals hang freely from the chain, so you can keep them together at the center or space them apart. Each medal's reverse is engraved with a Bible verse in Portuguese. How to wear them layered

Both chains adjust within the same range, so the key is to set them at different lengths. Fasten the cross at 16 inches so it sits just below the collarbone, then run the scapular out to 18 inches. Because the scapular medals hang below the chain, you get a clear gap between the two pieces and the chains stay apart.

The contrast between the two chains helps too. The paper clip chain has presence, and the fine cable chain nearly disappears, so the cross and the scapular each keep their own line.

This is a metal scapular, not a cloth one. The cloth Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is two small panels of brown wool joined by cords and worn over the shoulders. In 1910, Pope St. Pius X permitted those already enrolled in the devotion to wear a blessed medal in place of the cloth scapular. That is why the metal form exists, and people wear it every day throughout Brazil and much of Latin America, where heat makes wool impractical.

Enrollment by a priest comes first. The medal is what you wear afterward, as a sign of a commitment already made: to live the Christian life, to pray, and to entrust yourself to Our Lady. A scapular medal is not a charm. If you have not been enrolled, ask your parish priest. It takes a few minutes after Mass.

Is this a crucifix?

Is the cross safe for sensitive skin?
