A French Devotional Medal in the Art Deco Tradition

French pilgrims carried small enamel medals like this one throughout the twentieth century, slipping them into pockets, pinning them inside coats, and hanging them above cribs. The octagonal frame and the fluted base are Art Deco signatures of the 1930s and 40s, when devotional jewelry in France leaned toward clean geometry rather than ornate Victorian detailing. The Story of Lourdes

On February 11, 1858, a fourteen-year-old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous saw the Blessed Virgin Mary for the first time in a small grotto on the outskirts of Lourdes, France. Eighteen apparitions followed over the next six months. On March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation, Mary finally revealed her identity, speaking not in French but in Bernadette's native Bigourdan dialect of the Pyrenees: "Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou." I am the Immaculate Conception.

Today, Lourdes is the most visited Marian shrine in the world. More than six million pilgrims arrive each year to drink from the spring Bernadette uncovered and to pray before the Grotto where Our Lady appeared.
